David Levine 1926 - 2009

How very saddening it was to hear the news of David Levine's passing. I think most of us who practise caricature are deeply in debt to this great man for igniting the fire that fuels our passion for the art form. His work inspired me to become a better draughtsman and of course it was the study of his expert handling of pen & ink that taught me how to crosshatch.

The words Genius and Master are thrown around loosely these days but in his case these are titles certainly more than appropriate. In my humble opinion he definitely belongs beside Daumier and Thomas Nast as one of the greatest caricaturists to have ever lived.

What a joy it was to meet him by chance at the Met in NY...I found him to be a very warm, generous and humorous man and he will be greatly missed!!!

DrawingBoard Krüger Jam

Great Jam started by the ever brilliant Chris Wahl, (who by the way has added a stunner to the mix) on DrawingBoard's Caricature thread...time to pay homage to the "master" and have some fun while we're at it!!!
I had done a pencil sketch of him a few years ago while it was pretty tough to find good reference shot of him...so it's a bit funny that I added this one that was just a doodle while sitting at the computer without using reference...guess I've seen enough pics of him by now that his face is burned into memory :)

Check it out!!!

The Book Of Eli

I've taken this one as far as I want...I hope it resembles Denzel more than Dennis Haybert, but in any case it's a wrap!

I did notice that the new trailer for "Book Of Eli" has been posted...I'm absolutely looking forward to seeing this since I sort of had a preview of Denzel's special make-up for the film.

One for the "Happy Birthday Mickey Rooney" post on the I.S.C.A.'s Let's Draw Thread and then some character concepts I'm playing with. Also a prelim sketch for a "Denzel" painting.

Inspiration: De Sève & Goodrich

Peter de Sève and Carter Goodrich's careers seem to have run on a parallel course...almost mirroring each other. Both possess unique humorous styles that have graced the covers of many magazines, particularly the "New Yorker" as well as children's books and recently character design for animated films.

What a great pleasure it's been to finally have Peter De Sève enter into the blogging world to share his thoughts and artwork. Unfortunately Carter Goodrich has not as of yet (any online presence) but I'm hoping that he sees the outpouring of admiration Peter is receiving and realizes there are many of us out here who feel the same way about his work.

Along with the images posted I'm including a link to a hi-res pdf of a 1994 Peter de Sève tutorial that was originally published in Step-by-Step magazine and details his working process.

Goodnight Quentin & Salma

Time to put these two to bed!!! Salma's pretty much a failure as a caricature...she's tough (well at least for me).

*...and I woke up to a very nice surprise this morning being notified that "Salma" was selected to be in the top tier at CG Hub. I consider this a great honor and thank them profusely!!!

Salma Sketch

For the ISCA's "Let's Draw" thread...you can only imagine how tough it was going through the reference photos ;)
